The highly successful release of the 2023 action-adventure game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, certainly boosted sales, selling over 18 million units by the end of June, laying the way for this accomplishment. The game's reception has propelled Nintendo Switch hardware sales to new heights in the previous month itself. Amidst Nintendo Switch's achievement, the entire industry has been undergoing a positive transformation. The US video game sector is expected to reach an impressive $58.3 billion in 2023, increasing 3% from the previous year.

Despite some initial challenges involving insufficient supplies, the landscape of gaming consoles has evolved positively. New hardware is now more accessible, overcoming the issues encountered during the early phases of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S lifecycles. Impressively, the PS5 has outperformed the PS4, by 5%, and has also exceeded the PS3 by a remarkable 87%. The Xbox Series X|S, although lagging behind the Xbox One by 10%, has shown promise by outpacing the legendary Xbox 360 figures by 6%.

As the year unfolds, the Nintendo Switch continues to grow its market, as witnessed since its launch in 2017. With The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom as a catalyst, the console's demand is expected to keep accelerating. Having surpassed the Wii's lifetime US sales, the Nintendo Switch is now steadily getting closer to matching the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 2's sales, trailing behind them by a narrow margin of less than one million units and five million units, respectively. As these differences keep on going down, Nintendo Switch will undoubtedly cement its place as one of the most successful consoles ever.
